Jesus: The Name of Jesus (The J.O.Y. Experiment)

JESUS

(My J.O.Y. Journal that I made this weekend.  I'll share more about journaling on Friday.)

"Joseph, Son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will bear a son, and you shall call His name JESUS."
Matthew 1:20-21

And, there it was...
The long awaited Savior's name revealed...

JESUS

And, it was....

COMMON.

There were hundreds of little Hebrew boys running around with the name.

What?  Seriously, God?

Not Xavier? (to sound posh)
Or Steele? (with an E at the end to make it really cool & edgy)
Or Shine?  (for a shout out to the hippies)

JESUS. Simply JESUS.

(My year round Christmas tree with the Adorenament JESUS)

What is so special about the name of JESUS?

The name Jesus is derived from the Aramaic Yeshu.
Joshua to you & me.
Iesous in the Greek.  Jesus.
It means...
God Saves or God our Savior.

Jesus who humbled himself & took on a common name...

Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!
Philippians 2:6-8

When we say the name JESUS it encompasses ALL the names given Him in The Word.

Advocate, Almighty, Alpha & Omega, Ancient of Days, Beloved, Bread of Life, Bright & Morning Star, Chief Cornerstone, Christ, Creator, Emmanuel, Eternal Judge, Everlasting Father, Faithful & True, Finisher of Faith, God, Good Shepard, Healer, Holy, Image of God, I AM, Jehovah, King of Kings, Lamb of God, Light of the World, Living Water, Lord of All, Lord our Righteousness, Maker, Master, Mediator, Messiah, Minister, Only Begotten, Our Passover, Physician, Prince of Peace, Prophet, Rabbi, Redeemer, Revealer, Rock, Savior, Shepard, Son, Teacher, The Truth, The Way, Wisdom of God, & Word of Life.
  just to name a few....

When we simply whisper the name of JESUS in our deepest darkest times...
we are invoking all that He is & does.

No wonder there are so many songs written about His name.

Bill & Gloria Gaither wrote:

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
There's just something about that name
Master, Savior, Jesus
Like the fragrance after the rain
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Let all heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms shall all pass away
But there's something about that name.

The hymn by Lela Long...

There have been names that I have loved to hear,
But never has there been a name so dear
To this heart of mine, as the Name divine,
The precious, precious Name of Jesus.

Jesus is the sweetest name I know,
And He’s just the same as His lovely Name,
And that’s the reason why I love Him so;
Oh, Jesus is the sweetest name I know.

There is no name in earth or Heav’n above,
That we should give such honor and such love
As the blessèd Name, let us all acclaim,
That wondrous, glorious Name of Jesus.

And some day I shall see Him face to face
To thank and praise Him for His wondrous grace,
Which He gave to me, when He made me free,
The blessèd Son of God called Jesus.

In Philippians 2:9-11 it tells us that one day EVERY knee (in heaven, on the earth, & under the earth...I think that covers what EVERY means) shall bow & tongue confess at the name of JESUS that He is LORD.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

And, right now on our journey to J.O.Y., we need simply say His name...JESUS. When joy is elusive, say His name...JESUS.  When the simple day-to-day is just too much, say His name...JESUS.  When you do not where to turn or how to pray, whisper His name....JESUS.  And, He. is. there.

If you are still interested in the scripture memory cards below, just email me at justjilly@rocketmail.com & I'll be happy to send them to you.  This week, we are memorizing Phlippians 2:10-11.  The scripture memory cards are in The Message translation because it's my favorite.  But, you can memorize it in whatever you like!

On the 25th of January, I'll be posting the next name of Jesus & our scripture memory for February.  And, if you like...shoot me an email or leave a comment, I'd love to hear what He is teaching you about His sweet name.
