Friends, (Can I call y'all that? It's truly how I feel when I see how many of you stop by this silly little blog I started. So, if it's okay with you....we'll be friends.) there is nothing except maybe chocolate that I love more than bread. It is my nemesis to skinny jeans...that, and I don't really like skinny jeans. I'm more of a flared leg kind of girl. Faded denim. Some holes. Oh my heart sings. Dark denim that constantly makes me feel like I need to pull my undies out of my crack....not so much. Wow! All that because I professed my love of bread.
Years ago, a friend of my mama's brought these divine rolls to a ladies get-together. And, thus a Thanksgiving tradition was born. When my kiddos were wee ones I would wake up early and roll these out & bake them, the kiddos would sit and eat them piping hot while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. As their appetites grew, I had to start making a quadruple batch so we would have enough for Thanksgiving dinner.
If you haven't made bread before...this recipe is for YOU! It is so simple! And, you will see why they are aptly named...
ANGEL WING ROLLS
Shopping List:
1 pkg dry yeast
1/4 cup of warm water
1 cup scalded milk (you can use the microwave...about 2 1/2 minutes)
2 eggs
1/2 cup of sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup cooking oil
4 cups of unsifted flour
Butter
Combine all ingredients the NIGHT before.
Dissolve dry yeast in warm water. Beat eggs in large mixing bowl. Add sugar, salt, scalded milk. Stir the mixture. Add the dissolved yeast & oil. Stir again. Add flour. Stir. Cover with saran wrap & let sit overnight.
The next morning, put dough on floured board, turn over several times & divide into two parts. Do NOT work the flour in.
Roll each part round like pie crust. Cut into 16 wedges. I use a pizza cutter. So easy.
Roll the wide edge first. Place on greased cookie sheet about 1 1/2 inches apart. Be sure the end is tucked under the roll.
Bake 12 minutes at 375 degrees. And, brush with melted butter (on the cookie sheet) after cooking.
Enjoy! These are so worth your time. Just consider doubling your batch. Because these angel wing rolls just FLY off the cooling rack.
